You will recall that I promised some months ago to post pictures of attractive men smoking. Well we just had a lovely evening out at Emmanuel United Reformed Church on Trumpington Road listening to the increasingly sweet Tony Benn, hosted by the Cambridge Stop The War Coalition. The old rogue was in mellow mood, perched creakily on the edge of the table with microphone in hand, like Frank Sinatra on one of those final tours he was so fond of in his declining decades.
I went with Maureen and we wore our faded "Investors for Peace" badges and sat in the front row in the interests of conserving what's left of our eyesight. Unfortunately we were adjacent to the Huntington animal rights ladies who smelled strongly of old fox, which seems to me to be carrying the cause to extremes.
It was political tourism at its worst I suppose, as we have no intention whatsoever of taking to the streets in support of Mr Ahmedinajad, but I have to say that Tony is still right about almost everything. His final theme was the scarcity of resources and how important it was for us to ensure fairness in their distribution. "We are all in the lifeboat now and there really isn't enough food and water to go round" stuck in my mind as we headed for the door and the fresh Cambridge night.
I'm afraid we annoyed the keen young organisers from the Judean People's Front by leaving early, but we had booked our usual table at the Loch Fyne Oyster Restaurant opposite the Fitzwilliam and a nicely chilled bottle of chablis was calling to us.
